Entering the 2011 NFL betting line season, one of the biggest questions surrounding the league, was how would first overall draft pick out of Auburn and former Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton fair in the NFL. To say sports betting fans couldn’t agree would be putting it lightly. The two general beliefs were, Newton could become the next big franchise quarterback, that could play in the NFL for 20 years, or he could end up like 2007 fishing games first overall pick JaMarcus Russell, a draft day bust. Today we wonder if Newton is more the former then the latter. It has only been two games, both losses, however Cam Newton is providing Carolina Panthers fans with the type of optimism you would see in New England given by future hall of fame quarterback Tom Brady. While Brady appears in line for his second consecutive MVP trophy, after two games, Cam Newton appears to have the best college football betting chance at beating out Brady as MVP. Essentially, if his first two games of the season are any indication, Cam Newton is the safest NFL pick for MVP, as the rookie has averaged 430 passing yards in each of his first two career starts. What’s most intriguing about Newton’s early success is who he has done it against. Firstly, in a 28 – 21 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, Newton lit up a fantastic Cardinals secondary for 422 yards, while scoring two touchdowns and throwing one interception. Then this past weekend, Newton followed it up by throwing for 432 yards against the defending Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers. Now, we aren’t telling MVP voters to reward a guy for losing, but one can make the argument, that Newton should win the MVP award because of the team he is on. For the reason that Tom Brady is the best player on the best team in professional sports, it seems as though a second consecutive MVP award would be unfair. On the contrary, giving it to Newton, who is on the last place Carolina Panthers, may be the best thing, as he is showing he belongs in this league. What’s more, Newton’s schedule over the next few weeks should see the speedy pivot continue to get closer to the ever elusive 500 passing yards. Heading into week three, the Carolina Panthers will face a Jacksonville Jaguars squad that has basically self destructed over the first two weeks of the season. After losing a heart breaker 16 – 14 in week one, the Jaguars followed up the loss, by getting killed by the New York Jets 32 to three. Theoretically, Newton, who is considered to be better then Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, should hit 500 yards against one of the worst secondaries in the NFL.
After two games? Impressive yes. But he also lost both games. Give him a few years, then come back with the topci.
