Dominant Arroyo, Reds fend off Phillies

Bronson Arroyo took a perfect game into the fifth and went eight-plus innings as he and the Reds held off the Phillies for a 3-2 victory at Citizens Bank Park on Wednesday.

Arroyo gave up two runs on three hits with no walks and four strikeouts to improve to 10-7 on the season. After he allowed his third hit, a single with no outs in the ninth, Aroldis Chapman came in and earned his 31st save of the season despite allowing a run to score. The save was Chapman's 23rd in a row, tying the club's consecutive-saves record held by John Franco (1988) and Rob Dibble (1991).

As well as Arroyo was pitching, the Reds were also unable to reach the scoreboard early on despite spraying hits vs. Phillies starter Vance Worley. In the fourth after Jay Bruce hit a one-out triple and Scott Rolen was hit by a pitch, Todd Frazier attacked a 3-0 pitch and flied out to right field. It became a double play when Domonic Brown fired a perfect throw home to nail Bruce, who was trying to tag up and score, at the plate.
