Dorell Wright got activated when Shaq was placed on the IL. For the last 2 games of the season, the Heat and their fans got a chance to see their future starting SG/SF in action. Here's a little report on what I saw when he played.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">NBA Comparison: Tracy McGrady (I haven't read one scouting report that disagreed and from what I saw he does look like a raw T-Mac)

Athleticsm: Dorell has a lot of athleticsm and Van Gundy says he's even more athletic than Wade. He can run the floor real well for extended periods, is able to cover a lot of the floor on defense, and can go from fast to faster to fastest. He's also got a nice vert and leaping ability.

Passing: Wright is a good passer and has some point guard skills. He's a good ballhandler and can create plays for others. He showed that he can find the open teammate and make the crisp clean pass to him. He's a good play maker if needed but we'd probably be better off having a PG where Dorell can give us offense while also making plays for the team rather than having him as a full time play maker.

Defense: Dorell has all the potential to be a good defender. He's tall, has quick laterall speed, and has long arms. He does a good job of using his long arms to pick pocket his player, force turnovers, and contest shots. He's also does a good job of using his long arms and vertical leaping to rebound but he still needs get down the fundemantals of rebounding rather than relying on his natural gifts.

Offense: The scouting reports say he has a nice looking jumpshot that's effective from anywhere on the floor but he only landed one against the Magic. He can also post up players and use his strength to get off a good clean shot. He does a good job running through screens and can create his own shots. He seems to have good shot selection. He didn't force up bad shots and tried going for the dunk/layup or a closer shot if the opportunity presented itself. He's supposed to have a lot of moves on offense and can have big scoring games with ease. A projected 20ppg or more scorer in the league.</div>

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Rebounding: Right now he only relies on his long arms, vertical, and leaping ability to rebound. He needs to learn to get in better position on rebounding and box his opponents out.

Defense: Since he was the highest scorer on the team and usually on the floor, his previous coaching didn't emphasize defense because they didn't want him to get in foul trouble. From what I saw, he needs to position himself better because his player isolated him, put it on the floor, and took off on him. It's what they call "cement feet".

Offense: His jumpshot is good and effective but it's not the type of jumpshot a coach wants to see. They feel it could be better but it's a nice sign that he was knocking it down at a high rate with the form he came in the league with. From what I read, he also needs to extend his range to the 3 line. He took 2 attempts in the last games of the season so I think he has confidence in his 3pt shot and that he has worked on it.

Experience: Before entering the NBA Draft, he had only been playing about 2 years of competitive basketball. He doesn't have experience but it's pretty amazing that he can do what he's doing without a lot of experience.

Turnovers: From what I read, he's turnover prone. I don't know in what sense, but he turned it over once in the Magic game by being double teamed in the baseline and stepping out. He's a rookie so he was in an akward position plus his teammates didn't go help bail him out.

Strength: When he came into the league he was so scrawny. He's improved but he still has a long way to go before being primed for the physical play of the NBA, especially if he plays against real SFs.</div>

    Stats vs Orlando:
    22min 7pts (3-7FG 0-2 3PT 1-1FT) 1reb 2ast 3stls 1turnover

Eh, so far so good, just wait a few years, I really do think he has what it takes to become something like t-mac.
