The Sporting News July 7 issue will feature Duhon as a recipient of the 2006 Good Guy award which is given to an athlete who has displayed the greatest positive impact on the community outside sports, and the focus this year was on Hurricane Katrina relief. Each year, one athlete is presented the No. 1 Good Guy award. However, this year Sporting News decided to recognize three co-winners. Duhon will share the title with Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning and New Orleans Saints running back Deuce McAllister. All three athletes are Gulf Coast natives and are being honored for their involvement, commitment and contributions to the gulf coast region in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Duhon grew up in Slidell, La. just across Lake Pontchartrain from New Orleans. Almost immediately after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast including Slidell on August 29, the Bulls guard responded by launching his own Hurricane Relief Fund through his Stand Tall Foundation. Duhon began collecting financial donations and worked quickly with his mother, Vivian Harper, to organize emergency supply drives in Chicago, Northbrook and Lisle, Ill. The three drives resulted in more than 3,300 boxes of items to provide immediate relief to the victims. Clothing, shoes, toiletries, bottled water, cleaning products poured in from donors across the Chicagoland area as over 400 volunteers collected, sorted and packaged the items. To date, more than $400,000 has been raised to lend support to the town. Duhon will continue his recovery work this summer. In early July, he will return to Slidell for two major events: the building of the first Habitat for Humanity house he is co-funding and his annual basketball camp. ?So many bad things are written about our athletes today, and justifiably so,? said Paul Attner, Sporting News senior writer and author of the Good Guys section. ?Some athletes are bad people; some have forgotten their roots. I write about Good Guys this time each year because the bad guys don?t represent the majority of athletes and it?s good for all of us to be reminded of that. Many athletes care about the community, care about giving back, and remember where they came from. These are the athletes represented in Good Guys.? The Good Guys issue will be on newsstands June 28th. In addition to the awards, it will include a broad compilation of stories that pay tribute to athletes who have done notable community work. This is the eighth year the Sporting News has selected the top Good Guys. Past winners include Warrick Dunn (2005), Curt Schilling (2004), and Troy Vincent (2003).</div> Source Duhon is probably one of the most giving people in the NBA he is always doing charity work, and giving back to the community. He is our locker room leader, and probably the most underrated player on our team. He is the main reason we draft so many Duke players. Almost all the guys that come out of that program are class acts. Grant Hill, Chris Duhon, Luol Deng, the list goes on and on all class acts.
Good job Duhon. You can just tell he is a great guy, by just looking at him. Just seems like a very good guy.
duhon is the man! i remember that i thought he should be a lottery pick, i have always loved this guys game. i didnt know he was such a good guy in the community, good to see.
