Dunga picks Brazil squad for World Cup qualifying

Ronaldinho and Kaka were called up by Brazil coach Dunga on Thursday for the team's next two World Cup qualifiers.

The AC Milan players were both chosen for matches at Ecuador on March 29 and against Peru on April 1 despite struggling with injuries in the past month. Kaka injured his foot on Feb. 7 in a Serie A match against Reggina, and Ronaldinho has had lingering problems with an Achilles' heel.

Before a Feb. 10 friendly against Italy, Ronaldinho had not been summoned by Dunga for Brazil's previous three matches — a friendly against Portugal and World Cup qualifiers against Colombia and Venezuela. Dunga had said the player still needed to improve his form.

Two other Milan players, striker Alexandre Pato and defender Thiago Silva, were also picked, along with Manchester City striker Robinho and Inter Milan's Adriano.

Also, Internacional's Kleber was chosen ahead of Adriano Correia of Sevilla and Sao Paulo defender Mirando was picked ahead of AS Roma's Juan, who was injured in a Champions League match against Arsenal shortly after scoring a goal.

A pretty bad game for Brazil. I keep hearing the altitude excuse, but I can blame the poor performance only on this factor.

Brazil were held to a 1-1 draw with Ecuador following an lacklustre performance in Quito last night.

Substitute Julio Bapista scored against the run of the play to give Brazil a fortuitous lead deep into the second half, after his effort rebounded off the post and then off Ecuadorian goalkeeper José Cevallos to cross the line on 74 minutes.

Ecuador deservedly equalised in dramatic fashion as midfielder Cristian Noboa scored in the 89th minute after Santos Laguna’s Christian Benítez saw his effort blocked by Julio Cesar.

Julio Cesar’s was pivotal to the Brazilians as Ecuador dominated throughout the first half as Dunga’s side struggled to adapt to playing 2,800 metres above sea level. The Inter Milan ‘keeper pulled off a string of saves to keep Brazil in the game as well as saving from LDU Quito pair Edison Méndez and Joffre Guerron in quick succession.

The draw, their sixth of the qualifying campaign, leaves Brazil in fourth place in the CONMEBOL Qualifying Group, just two points ahead of fifth place Uruguay. The Seleção now face Peru on Wednesday in Porto Alegre, where a defeat could have disastrous consequences.
