TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Training camp will break Friday morning with Peyton Manning having missed all 25 full-squad workouts.

But the Indianapolis Colts remain confident their two-time NFL MVP quarterback will be ready for their Sept. 7 regular-season opener against the Chicago Bears.

Manning had surgery on July 14 to remove an infected bursa sac from his left knee. “He’s doing exactly what we thought he would do,” coach Tony Dungy said after this morning’s workout at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

Tom Santi had a similar procedure two weeks before Manning’s operation and the rookie tight end began running after practice earlier this week.

Santi, Dungy said, “is about ready to come back and practice and I would imagine Peyton will be a couple of weeks behind him. But as far as being on target, having no real setbacks, he’s doing fine.

“He’s rehabbing, (regaining) the range of motion, doing what they’re asking him to do. He’s throwing some. He’s lifting. He’s staying active. At some point he’ll get the OK (to practice).”

Manning is one of six Colts on the physically unable to perform list. The team anticipates defensive end Dwight Freeney (foot); safety Bob Sanders (shoulder); and perhaps Santi to begin practicing next week. It might be another week or two before Manning and guard Ryan Lilja gain medical clearance.

Linebacker Tyjuan Hagler (chest) is expected to be out at least until October.</div>
