Return of the King eh... will they have hobbits rather than scantily clad women escorting the fighters to the ring [IMG]

Nick Diaz misses weight for Hawaiian EliteXC event

EliteXC lightweight Nick Diaz failed to make weight for Saturday's "EliteXC: Return of the King" event, but opponent Muhsin Corbbrey has agreed to go through with the fight at a catchweight of 168 pounds.

Diaz was aware he would likely fail to make weight and notified the organization and Corbbrey's camp ahead of time, EliteXC officials told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).

Diaz's bout is scheduled for the night's main card, which airs on Showtime at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Corbbrey will receive a portion of Diaz's fight purse. Back on May 11, Diaz fought Katsuya Inoue at DREAM.3, which was his first fight since a November loss for the EliteXC lightweight title. The DREAM fight was contested at 170 pounds.

Headliners Yves Edwards (158.5) and EliteXC lightweight champ KJ Noons (160) had no trouble making the 160-pound limit for their five-round main event.

Muhsin Corbbrey (163.5) vs. Nick Diaz (169)*
Carl Barton (183) vs. Kepa Madeiros (171.5)**

    * - The fight will be contested at 168 pounds (originally scheduled for 160)
** - The fight is scheduled for 185 pounds

Wow 183 vs. 171.5, that is a big weight difference. The Barton guy must have Bisping'ed it and drank beer, eaten cheeseburgers, and wings all the time to try to cut weight.

Nick Diaz looked huge compared to his opponent Muhsin Corbbrey, but he still isn't progressing the way he should be. Diaz is a bit of a mystery to me. He has all the skills to be a top fighter for his weight class, whichever that may be, but he doesn't seem to have the consistency. A solid win for him tonight but a drawn-out one where his take down attempts were sloppy and his boxing was accurate but seriously lacking power.

What about Ninja Rua, though? He looked as good as ever--maybe the best he's ever looked. Phenomenal fight against an unknown but seemingly game opponent. This is the Rua that people want to see. Hopefully the new team doesn't just benefit him as we all want to see Shogun back in form as well.

But the story of the night is EliteXC showing why they are a second-rate organization by sending Nick Diaz into the ring after KJ Noon's title defense so he can flip him off and nearly cause a brawl. Great idea.
