Since Rich Cho was fired and they are still "evaluating" candidates and finding the next coach will wait until they bring in a GM.

In other news, Orlando is meeting tomorrow to discuss which GM candidates to target.

A friend of mine texted me and wondered if Orlando also looking for a GM would cause the Blazers to work a little faster.

    1. Good candidates gone

    2. Makes us look worse than we already do

Personally, I think this hand-wringing over the GM spot is absolutely silly. Cho not working out and being let go so quickly after being hired was a black eye to the organization and they want to get it right this time. They want an experienced person for the GM spot and most of the guys that they want to interview are under contract to their current teams. Only as their teams' seasons end have the Blazers been given the approval to talk to their candidates. There are still a couple of guys that they want to talk to who haven't been cleared for interviews yet. So, they're supposed to hire the wrong person just because a bunch of nervous Nellies are getting antsy? The plan is to have somebody on board before the draft and there's still plenty of time for that to happen.

It really doesn't take this long ... I mean have you ever heard of another franchise taking this much time to make a hire? How do they get it done?

I know Davis was a bleeding edge innovator back in the sixties with his vertical passing game and aggressive attacking defenses ... it's just that the 75+ years old version is pretty much how I see Allen's handling of the Blazers over the past decade+ ... except he can't use the senility defense.

The only question in my mind is why they didn't make a hire last summer, but I put that off to there being a high likelihood that this season was going to be lost to the lockout. I think Paul Allen was comfortable with letting Buchanan run the show and chose to let it slide vs. getting stuck paying a big salary when the season might be lost. We can nitpick whether that was a smart decision or not, but once it was made, I think that rushing to hire somebody after the start of the season would have been a recipe for another disaster. Anybody worth their salt already had a job. It was smart waiting until the better candidate pool opened up.
