Re: ESPN's Who's Now is BS If you haven't been following, ESPN is holding this 32-athlete, bracket-style tournament Called: Who's Now. The whole purpose of this tournament is to end all debates between sports fans about who the ultimate sports star is. Who's Now doesn't just take into account on-the-field success, but also celebrity status off the field as well. To be the most "Now", you've got to have it all. It's a good idea don't get me wrong, but I'm shocked, appaled, and dismayed over some of the fans decisions.<u>How in the Freaking world is LaDanlian Tomlinson more "Now" than David Beckham? </u>LT is arguably the best RB in football, but he has not yet won a playoff game, and isn't even considered the face of his sport. Yes, he holds records and quite possibly is the greatest running back of my generation, but WIN SOMETHING DAMMIT!!David Beckham, however, is/was the face of soccer both here in the U.S. as well as wround the world. he is nothing short of iconic. Many discredit his impact on sports because America doesn't embrace Soccer the way the rest of the world does (yes I know, we're ignorant). But if you are looking for the definition of the term "Sports Star" David Beckham isn't far from that at all.<u>And how is Steve Nash more "Now" than Serena Williams? </u>I know Steve Nash has 2 MVP awards, but Tim Duncan has 2 MVP's, 3 NBA Finals MVP trophies, 4 NBA Championship rings, and he isn't even in this tournament. Off the court, Steve is basically non-existent. And despite those MVP's, if you ask many NBA players who they think is the best player in the league, Steve Nash will be in the top 5, but not number one.Serena Williams is a great tennis player (arguably the best of all time). She is 1 of only 9 players to win all four Grand Slam events. She has alot of hardwood and respect all throughout her sport. One that tennis has that other sports do not have is a ranking system, and there was a point in time where Serena Williams was the number on tennis player in the world. Both she and her sister have brought a flavor to their sport that has never been seen before. She's also a great entrepreneur, having a clothing line, her own fragrance. On top of all that, she is be considered a sex symbol.I know I'm venting alot because personally I think this thing is BS, but what do you think about it?
Re: ESPN's Who's Now is BS Did you also notice how the "experts" said that Williams and Beckhem are more "now". Its just their are way more basketball/football fans then soccer/tennis so the fan vote will most likely go towards the more popular sports.
Re: ESPN's Who's Now is BS Beckham was never the face of soccer around the world, only in England and in the US. Everywhere else its been rohnaldhino, ronaldo henry and many others

After shattering the single season touchdown record for RB's, he's easily the most recognizable face next to Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. What does winning championships have to do with being "now"? He's the best and most popular RB in the league. David Beckham was the face of soccer at one time, but the US doesn't care...Most people outside of LA don't really care about his appearance in the MLS anyway, so he can't be considered as "now"<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (ProStix#6 @ Jul 5 2007, 04:52 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>And how is Steve Nash more "Now" than Serena Williams?</div>Once again, you're comparing one of the biggest sports in all of the United States with one that gets a lot less attention...NFL vs MLS and now NBA vs Women's Tennis. The latter of the two just aren't as popular and therefore can't be considered "now" if nobody pays as much attention to it. Sure, Serena Williams has won major championships in her sport, but it gets much less exposure than the Phoenix Suns, their high-powered offense, and the most talked about PG in the league. Beckham was definitely the face of soccer long before Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, and Thierry Henry were around (You also exclude Zinedine Zidane) Beckham also makes the most amount of money in the sport because of the numerous ads and products that he puts out (Meaning he wasn't just popular in the US and England)

Re: ESPN's Who's Now is BS I'm a little disappointed with the Shawn White losing to Dwyane Wade thing, but I can't expect anyone to vote differently. Shawn White is awesome in two sports, and I dare you to name 5 other snowboarders. No other snowboarder gets the media coverage and advertisement deals that he does. Dwyane is slightly overrated, but meh.As for Nash and Serena, I couldn't care less what the "experts" think. The experts are Wilbon, Herbstreet, and Keyshawn Johnson (who apparently is a friend of Serena's). Keyshawn actually said that people probably don't know who Steve Nash is unless they are a basketball fan. Maybe it's just my point of view, but that seems pretty wrong. So what if Steve Nash doesn't have the accolades that Tim Duncan has. This isn't Nash vs. Duncan, it's Nash vs. Williams. Even if you want to go that route, there are other girls in tennis that get much more attention than Serena (partly because there is little to no interest in the black community for tennis, and partly because she isn't all that attractive). I can't think of the last time I saw a commercial with Serena in it, either. As for LT, I can't really argue with that. It was really just a .4% swing, and if you had done the comparison in say, Europe, Beckham probably would have won by a landslide. Us not liking soccer doesn't make us "ignorant" though; that's a huge stretch. And yeah, it's voted for online, so you shouldn't take it so seriously.
Re: ESPN's Who's Now is BS Are there any brackets online you can look at to see how it's going? I'm missing a lot of it on TV and I kind of want to see how everything turns out.

Re: ESPN's Who's Now is BS The sport you play shouln't be the deciding factor. It's dumb, though it's a decent efort trying to find out who the biggest sports star.BTW, I bold everything. It's just my thing, so go find yours and leave mine alone.
Re: ESPN's Who's Now is BS the bold is actually easier to read IMO.I agree with what you said except for williams being the best tennis player of all time. She's probably top 15 but Marina Navratilova has to be #1 IMO.

It is who commands the most attention, hangs out with celebrities, and is important on the field. Serena Williams is a great player, but I have a hard time believing that she is more well known that Steve Nash. It's close, but you're making it out like it should be Serena in a landslide.I do have a problem with the American sports star vs. foreign sports star thing that they have. No foreign player is going to win. We've seen this twice with Ronaldinho vs. Kobe and Beckham vs. LT. I don't think Kobe or LT should have won in those, but when it's a poll on an American network, of course that's going to happen. I think they should have done it with just American stars. That said, I don't see why ESPN should give a flying F*ck what you whiners think. I mean look, they made a silly game, and now you're giving them publicity on the internet. Apparently what they were going for WORKED.

The only part I disagree with is the part about Serena Williams...but maybe that's just because I come from a HUGE tennis family.

I understand Serena is an insane athlete as far as women's tennis goes, not to mention humans in general. It's hard to compare them really. Serena has tons of wins, titles, etc. The problem that I have is that people are using that as a tool for comparison... Nash is in a team sport. He has won two MVP's and led both the Mavs and the Suns to multiple 60 win seasons. As far as individual basketball athletes go, he is way up there. Like I mentioned before, I haven't really seen Serena in any commercials. Maybe it's because I don't watch tennis. I will admit I'm biased, but apparently a lot of other people must be too.I think some guys are going to get the short end of the stick in this, though. Federer, Sharapova, and Michael Phelps will probably go down pretty quickly. Shaun White got his ass kicked considering he's a multi-sport talent that's in a ton of commercials. Probably the best thing to happen to extreme sports since Tony Hawk.
