Newcastle midfielder Emre has been charged with "using racially-aggravated abusive and/or insulting words" by the Football Association.

The Turkish international has been charged in relation to an incident involving Everton keeper Tim Howard and defenders Joleon Lescott and Joseph Yobo, after the 26-year-old won a penalty during the Magpies' 3-0 defeat at Goodison Park on December 30.

Emre has until January 29 to make his response, while Newcastle have stated that he "intends to deny the charge".

The charge will come as a shock to Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder, who claimed there was "no charge to be answered" when the FA wrote to Everton to request further information days after the incident took place as referee Dermot Gallagher did not hear the alleged comments.

Emre's agent Ahmet Bulut said: "I spoke with Emre and he said that he never said anything racist to the player."</div>Do you believe Emre says that? [IMG]
