Fairytale Start Satisfies Roussey

Saint-Étienne took a huge step towards qualifying for the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup with a solid 3-1 victory over Copenhagen in Denmark last night, leaving head coach Laurent Roussey very pleased indeed…

In the land that gave the world Hans-Christian Andersen, Saint-Étienne got their UEFA Cup group stage campaign off to a fairytale beginning as Bafé Gomis had them ahead inside 60 seconds before Jody Viviani save a penalty kick two minutes later. Ultimately, Sainté would score further goals through Loïc Perrin and Dimitri Payet to win 3-1.

Understandably, head coach Laurent Roussey was left pleased.

“This match was a great satisfaction,” the head coach explained to the club’s official website, “Bravo to the players who successfully completed a full match, which I think they took great pleasure from. When you win by such a score against such an adversary away from home in European competition you cannot help but be pleased.

“We have to be very satisfied because, aside from the victory, we managed possession very well… We developed some effective and creative play. It is the scenario that we hoped for, even if we dare not imagine it.”

Roussey’s side will not have long to savour their success as they face Grenoble on Sunday as their gruelling diary of matches continues. “What matters now is that we go back to the league and face Grenoble on Sunday,” he states, “The UEFA Cup is in the past now.”
