Tampa Bay midfielder Takuya Yamada scored the only goal to defeat the Montreal Impact in their North American Soccer League season opener on Saturday at Al Lang Stadium, in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Yamada scored in the 87th minute of play. beating Impact goalkeeper Bill Gaudette with a shot from about 30 metres. The gial came two minutes after Tsuyoshi Yoshitake missed a penalty kick that sailed wide to the left of the net.

“We played the kind of match we needed to play on the road," Impact head coach Marc Dos Santos told impactmontreal.com. “We created a number of chances for ourselves, but their goalkeeper made at least three key saves. It’s unfortunate because we deserved at least a point tonight.”

The Impact hasn’t won its season-opening match since 2004 (0-3-4).
