Thought it was post worthy because he actually met and interviewed Billups in Vegas and seems to have decent sources. Theres actual audio from his interview in this episode as well. Highlights - Billups said “we’re gonna find out who wants to win” and Fentress thinks that was somewhat aimed at Dame, as in he’s gonna hold him accountable defensively. And it’s not a bad thing, because Dame welcomes that accountability. The suggestion here is that the team leader needs to be first to buy in defensively, and that’s something Billups learned from Larry Brown - “We gotta do a better job at creating open threes, corner threes” There were too many contested threes/shots last year aka stupid shots. - “There are gonna be games where Dame’s got it going and we gotta ride it, but that can’t be where our season lives and dies. Too hard, and puts too much pressure on Dame.” - Billups is really excited to have Zeller and singled him out. High IQ player, good facilitator, plays hard, holds his own on the perimeter unlike Kanter. - They wanna move the ball around and surround Simons on the second unit with shooters, which was one of the reasons they brought in mclemore and snell. Also, Dame and CJ might be playing fewer minutes. (Personal opinion I think that means CJ won’t be on the second unit, at least initially) - Billups wants to include Powell in the offense more than Stotts did. They love the idea of him attacking the basket and he will have more opportunities to do so. - Billups is gonna lean a lot on Brooks and the other coaches and won’t let his ego get in the way. Another thing he learned from Larry Brown. - Fentress thinks Brown is the best athlete at that height the Blazers have had in recent memory. Thinks he’s more of a three than four.
