Ferguson: Premiership Reffing Is Slipping

QUOTE

Sir Alex Ferguson believes that the standard of refereeing in the Premiership is going downhill after a failure to implement proposed changes.
The Manchester United supremo believes that the promise to punish bad tackles has not come into force and that is beginning to cause problems in certain matches. During the Red Devils' defeat at Bolton Wanderers last weekend, the fiery Scot made his feelings know to Mark Clattenburg and was sent to the stands for his troubles. Now he has spoken more rationally about the need for more consistency after the professional referees' boss, Keith Hackett, made plans to make changes before the season began. “I think they are slipping," Ferguson said. "Hackett was on about tackling during the summer conferences which I didn’t attend, thank goodness. “He made a promise to the managers that tackles with a raised foot off the ground would be a red card - that tackles from behind would be a red card. “So the standards must be slipping because there have been some bad tackles recently, and not just in our games but in a few games. “Every game is different and it is interpretation by different referees that make it an interesting game.” Ferguson has opted not to appeal against the red card that he was given at the Reebok Stadium and will serve his suspension in the stands.
