Italian supercar manufacturer Ferrari has been slapped with a $3.5 million fine from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for neglecting to report the safety issues its vehicles had.

For much of its life cycle Ferrari had in fact been exempt from reporting its safety issues, thanks in part to the relatively small number of consumers that would be able to purchase their million-dollar performance cars. However, with the 2011 Fiat-Chrysler merger the automaker came under the aegis of the new company, making it necessary for Ferrari to comply with regulations requiring vehicle safety issues and customer complaints to be reported. The terms of the reporting call for quarterly reports to be submitted to the NHTSA in order for regular review.
