I don't understand why this is surprising to anyone. Do we not have psychotic people in America? Do we say, "Mailmen killing for sport" when a guy goes postal?

These guys are trained to kill. Period. It's not beyond the realm of possibility that SOME of the people who join the military are fucked up in the head, furthermore, it's not unreasonable to think that sometimes these guys lose touch with reality. It's sad. It's unfortunate. It's terrible for the people who are victimized by it, but it's been happening in every war for thousands of years.

It seems as if the military legal system is working in this case. These criminals will probably be sentenced to death, and have their sentenced reduced or stuck in civilian appeal for years. The military's sentenced over a dozen people to die in recent years, but no one has actually made it to the hanging (figuratively) since 1961, iirc.

Well...we do say that the guy "went postal". Pretty much the same thing.
