The drop from Pops to the next tier is precipitous. Back when Sloan coached Tier 1 was exclusively Pops' tier, and Tier 2 was exclusively Sloan's tier - everyone else was Tier 3 or lower. Although Brown, during his short Pistons stint, joined Jerry for a brief period of time. I've never been all that enamored with Carlisle, but I would say he's certainly better than Terry. I'd leave Tier 2 empty, Carlisle/Stevens/etc on Tier 3. Terry on Tier 4.
What has Carlisle done at Dallas during the same time as Stotts at Portland makes him a "tier 2" coach and better than Stotts?
Mods, you might as well just close this thread. At this point, nobody is going to change their minds. Trying to discuss it just makes the frustration worse.
Danny did good by trading Thomas for Irving. But he was dumb not immediately flipping Irving for a different player. I'd never want to build a team around that guy.
Kind of like Butler all this stuff was coming out of cleveland and it was ignored because of how good he is. Then when he was traded the stories didn't really go away and it turns out he is just a hard player to handle and make happy.
Yes, Carlisle I would put in the top 3/4 of coaches. The last few years the guy has not had good rosters, at all. His by FAR best player is a rookie this year. 1- Pop 2- Brad 3- Rick C
His in-game coaching/management. His tactical skills, the X's and O's, coaches widely respect him for this. His teams play hard and he doesn't lose players. Guys buy in and play hard for him, year after year. He wins with good rosters - Detroit, Indiana and Dallas. His roster now is a shit show outside of Luka and they compete nightly.
Also - I know Canales (now in NY as an assistant) says great things about Carlisle, how much he learned from him - the reason he left Portland for Dallas was a chance to learn from Rick. Also Todd Forcier's brother, Chad, a long time coach in the league got his first coaching opportunity with Carlisle and said a ton of great things about him (per Todd).
I dont have anything “bad” to say about him, Im just not totally convinced he’s an elite NBA head coach. He might be, I kind of go back and forth with it. I havent been a fan of his, but your explanation is nice and gives perspective on it so thanks!
What's funny, and no I can't prove it, but I would venture a guess that if Carlisle was here and Stotts was at Dallas the opinions would be the opposite. It's the nature of this forum to think that the grass is always greener on the other side.
So if Stotts was in Dallas I wouldnt be a fan of his, and I would question if he was actually an elite head coach, and that would mean I think the grass is greener over there? Im kind of confused here...
