My ignorance of current events is quite embarrassing. I've heard that every hundred years or so, New York is hit with a huge storm which results in floods. I don't think it's as severe as shown in "The Day After Tomorrow", but can someone explain it to me?

What are the chances it happens? How much damage does it cause?

I live pretty close to the coast...so haha, I'm screwed.
