Ah ok, finally saw a story that filled in some details. They found him by comparing his DNA from the crime scenes to DNA submitted to genealogy sites, got a match there to a relative, and then used the identity of the relative to figure out who he was. barfo

It didn't say it was the first, but it didn't reference any similar cases either. I imagine that the genealogy sites have only recently gotten enough data to make this possible without getting very lucky - but I'd guess we'll be hearing of more and more cases now. barfo
