The Detroit Lions announced that former cornerback James (Hound Dog) Hunter died this morning of an apparent heart attack. He was 56. The Lions drafted Hunter 10th overall in 1976 out of Grambling State, and he played for them until he retired after the 1982 season. He led the team in interceptions in 1976, ’77 and ’80 and finished with 27 career interceptions. “James Hunter shall always be remembered as a consummate pro — on and off the field,” Lions president Tom Lewand said in a released statement. “He made a significant impact on the field, in the community, as a businessman, as a business partner with the Lions in recent years, and as a husband and father.
