A small plane crashed on an Atlanta interstate on Friday, killing all four people onboard, officials said.

The plane, a Piper PA-32, took off from DeKalb Peachtree Airport and crashed about a mile away, FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen told NBC affiliate WXIA in Atlanta.

Grady Byrd of Asheville, North Carolina, told the station that the victims were his son, two grandsons, and the fiancee of one of his grandsons.

The crash shut down both directions of Interstate 285, resulting in massive traffic jams. Driver Don McGhee told the Associated Press he saw the plane hit a traffic light pole on its way down.
