The Murdochs have decided Bill O’Reilly’s 21-year run at Fox News will come to an end. According to sources briefed on the discussions, network executives are preparing to announce O’Reilly’s departure before he returns from an Italian vacation on April 24. Now the big questions are how the exit will look and who will replace him. Wednesday morning, according to sources, executives are holding emergency meetings to discuss how they can sever the relationship with the country’s highest-rated cable-news host without causing collateral damage to the network. The board of Fox News’ parent company, 21st Century Fox, is scheduled to meet on Thursday to discuss the matter. Sources briefed on the discussions say O’Reilly’s exit negotiations are moving quickly. Right now, a key issue on the table is whether he would be allowed to say good-bye to his audience, perhaps the most loyal in all of cable (O’Reilly’s ratings have ticked up during the sexual-harassment allegations). Fox executives are leaning against allowing him to have a sign-off, sources say. The other main issue on the table is money. O’Reilly recently signed a new multiyear contract worth more than $20 million per year. When Roger Ailes left Fox News last summer, the Murdochs paid out $40 million, the remainder of his contract. http://nymag.com/daily/intelligence...-news-has-decided-bill-oreilly-has-to-go.html
That seems a bit more definitive about the situation than other reports I've seen. I wonder if they have a different source or if they're overplaying their story. Either way, I kind of felt like O'Reilly had jumped the shark in the last year or so. It will be interesting to see who Fox News decides to replace him with if he's actually gone. I don't think they've got anyone in their current stable of personalities who can pull it off.
Conan didn't sexually harass anyone but to your point, it doesn't matter anyway. Not to his Christian base followers. Weird how that works.....
I watch Conan and he sexually harasses every female guest he has on. They just don't sue him because he's not a Conservative.
Don't recall Conan having to dole out $13 million to settle with his "victims" Give me a break. This guy is an all-time prick.
I think Fox should offer Rachel Maddow $20 mil to take the slot, with the caveat that she has to switch to conservative views. I like entertainment in the news industry.
This is what they're actually going to do: http://www.foxnews.com/entertainmen...l-oreilly-in-wake-harassment-allegations.html That's a really weak lineup, IMHO. The network managed to kill O'Reilly's career and their own network in a single move. Liberals rejoice.
Nah, he established his own foundation and gave speeches for $500,000 a pop, became a respected elder statesman of the Democratic Party, but failed to get his wife elected president. Oh, wrong misogynistic Bill? I have no doubt that O'Reilly is at times a tool and, based on the settlement of the sexual harassment claims against him, I have no doubt that he deserved what he got in being fired. That said, Fox just gave him a $20 million contract despite the fact that they were fully aware of the harassment claims and participated in the monetary settlement. The women's issues didn't matter until the spotlight of the NY Times report was turned on. I have equally little sympathy for them losing viewership and money as a result of this. Do I think that this is somehow an isolated incident unique to Fox News? Hardly. Men in positions of power have been abusing female employees since the dawn of time. It's good to see this getting the attention it deserves.
