With all the money the Suns will have free at the end of the season, what options should they consider? Should they sign a couple quality free agents, or should they pursue an all-star caliber one like Steve Nash or Kobe Bryant? Although Kobe is really good, I think they should bring in a good point guard, to compliment an already great 2 guard in Joe Johnson. If they bring in a good 2, then the same thing will happen like when Penny was here, and Joe won't play as good. What do you all think?
I think our back court is set with Barbosa and JJ. We also have Vujanic coming in next year. He can play both guard spots and we still have Casey Jacobson. We need a good offensive Center via draft or trade.
When the trade first happened my thought was "Kobe or bust" -- now it's more focused on the current Suns roster, devloping Johnson and Barbosa, and keeping Marion and Amare happy... I think their roster is pretty close to being good, they just miss a few things. Therefore my answer is spend it wisely. The Penny signing looked good at the time, but we were in purgatory for a lot of seasons because of him and Googs. They need to wisely spend the money, which to me means getting quality players at a reasonable price tag. Take note from the Nuggets and Knicks, payroll doesn't always translate to wins. Nuggets got quality players at low price tags, the Knicks got semi-All-Stars for large contracts... who's currently doing better? So with that said I think the Suns should focus on their front court. As thin as their backcourt is, I think the draft and Vujanic will solidify the backcourt. The Suns can't get by with smallball, in free agentcy they better pick up a Center... he doesn't need to be Shaq, but somebody like Adonal Foyle (who's an UFA this summer). They NEED somebody in the Cliff Robinson mode, who can play all 3 front court positions and makes the defensive plays we so badly need (maybe Keon Clark). With Amare, Marion, Cabarkapa, Lampe and Voskul (and maybe White if they keep him) the Suns will have a solid frontcourt by bringing in Foyle and Clark (or players similar). The Suns will most likely try to bribe Charlotte with a draft pick to take Eisley, so assuming that happens and they only have their pick (giving the Knicks one to the Bobcats) they could take somebody like Andre Iguodala. Then their backcourt will have Barbosa, Vujanic, Johnson, Jacobsen, and Iguodala (where Iguodala and Jacobsen could play SF if needed). Then by signing a leadership type guard, somebody like Jon/Brent Barry... the Suns would be playoff bound, still doubt they can win a Championship with these players... but it's a start! I'm sure the Suns have their ideas, and most are dealing away players and picks rather than building on what they have... but this is what I'd do with the money, rather than throwing away what I have and starting over... but Bryan Colangelo does make more good moves than bad ones... so I guess we have to trust him.
Well spending wisely is always a goal for teams in the free agent market. Some teams just have a better grasp on what spending wisely is than other teams. I don't think Nash would be a good pickup because he always has a knack for breaking down at the end of seasons and as he gets older he will be feeling the breakdown even more. I don't think there's a chance for Kobe, unless some sign and trade is going on. Realistically I don't believe that any moves the Suns make in free agency this year will make them any sort of contender for a championship, or a contender to get far in the playoffs.
I was looking through old threads, and this was the first thread I started a few years back. I couldn't help but laugh at the predictions. I'm not trying to offend, just making a point that sometimes we're way off in our discussions. Some highlights... <div class="quote_poster">AzBalla17 Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">I think our back court is set with Barbosa and JJ. Vujanic never came from Europe. <div class="quote_poster">scorbutic Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">With Amare, Marion, Cabarkapa, Lampe and Voskul (and maybe White if they keep him) the Suns will have a solid frontcourt by bringing in Foyle and Clark (or players similar). Three years later and we're unsatisfied if we can't add KG to a frontcourt with an All-NBA player, a perennial All-Star, and a Most Improved Player. At least one prediction was right... <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">I'm sure the Suns have their ideas, and most are dealing away players and picks rather than building on what they have... but this is what I'd do with the money, rather than throwing away what I have and starting over... but Bryan Colangelo does make more good moves than bad ones... so I guess we have to trust him.</div> We miss you BC. The Nash move was brilliant, and that singular move instantly made them championship contenders.
Hey I still stand by my stance At the time my opinion wasn't necessarily all that bad. Just ask Mark Cuban.
