Former NFL superstar Jerry Rice is out of his league on Nationwide Tour

Jerry Rice had modest expectations for his first round on the Nationwide Tour on Thursday. By the time he began to meet them, he'd left himself little chance of playing on the weekend.

The former football superstar had three double bogeys in his first seven holes en route to a 12-over par 83 at the Fresh Express Classic at TPC Stonebrae in Hayward, leaving him tied for 153rd place out of 156 golfers and 20 shots back of leader Dicky Pride. Seventy players are at 1 under or better, and only the top 60 plus ties make the cut to play Saturday and Sunday.

Pride fires 63 for lead at Stonebrae

Dicky Pride made a hole-in-one and fired an eight-under 63 to take the first-round lead Thursday at the Nationwide Tour's Fresh Express Classic.

Pride aced the fourth hole TPC Stonebrae and also collected six birdies to take a one-shot lead over five players. The 40-year-old won the 1994 St. Jude Classic on the PGA Tour, but has never titled on the developmental tour.

Rice shoots 76, grabs measure of redemption

Jerry Rice had trouble sleeping Thursday night. He struggled mightily in his Nationwide Tour debut earlier that day, and he was eager to take another crack at the hilly TPC Stonebrae course in Hayward.

"I woke up at 2 staring at the clock," Rice said Friday. "I couldn't wait for the sun to rise. I had to get out here and redeem myself."

He achieved his goal, in many ways, by posting 5-over-par 76 in the second round of the Fresh Express Classic. That didn't prevent him from missing the cut by a country mile, but it provided some satisfaction - he pocketed three birdies and 10 pars and improved on his opening-round 83 by seven strokes.

Kevin Chappell wins first Nationwide Tour title

Former UCLA star Kevin Chappell won the Fresh Express Classic on Sunday for first Nationwide Tour title, birdieing two of the last four holes for a 6-under 65 for a one-stroke victory over Canadian David Hearn.

The 23-year-old Chappell opened with rounds of 66, 67 and 66 en route to a tournament-record 20-under 264 total at TPC Stonebrae. In the 2008 NCAA tournament, he won the individual title to lead the Bruins to the team championship.
