Defend themselves against what? If the guns all disappeared, you'd presumably be defending against knives, clubs, fists, and so on. Everyone would have access to those for self-defense unless they also disappeared, in which case you wouldn't need to defend against them either. barfo
Defend themselves against those who are bigger and stronger. Females are at a serious disadvantage for example, as are the elderly. If there's a home invasion you might want to be able to blast someone before they get within distance. But you are right, in the sense, that if guns disappeared, people could still attack us with knives. There have been many mass kniving attacks in asian countries for example.

The reality is guns maintain a distance that nothing else can. And there are many strong and many weak people in this world. So you would have the potential for weaker people to be completely susceptible to the strong without any distance protection whatsoever? I mean you are a pirate, so I could understand the lack of understanding of the other side, but you aren't being realistic. My wife would lose in a knife fight. I would probably lose in a knife fight if the other is skilled with a knife. Not taking that chance. Your right to take that chance, but don't deny that right of defense for others.
