ESCANABA ? Lynn Chandnois went from the Garden Peninsula to National Football League stardom. Now, 50 years after his last game, the Fayette native has received an unexpected honor.

Chandnois is one of 10 new inductees into the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame. He will be inducted April 28 in Iron Mountain.

When his parents (Wilford and Leonia) and a sister (Armile) died, Chandnois moved to Flint as a youngster and lived with an aunt. ?They never told me a heckuva lot, but from what I hear from my relatives they died of spinal meningitis or tuberculosis,? he said.

Doctors detected a spot in his lungs years ago, but it was only a scar.

Lynn Chandnois is my mother-in-law's first cousin. That makes him my son's third cousin. I spoke to him on the phone this morning and congratulated him on being elected to the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame. He was great to talk to and was glad to hear we'll be attending his induction. He's sending me an autographed 8X10 in his Steelers uniform for my Sports Bar in my basement. I have all his football cards from his days with the Steelers.

The 1952 NFL Player of the Year ... it was before the MVP award.

Should probably post a link to the original article if you're going to wholesale copy and paste. That's Vikingfan's rule here these days.

Inducted to the UP HOF? Can't say I'm too excited.

I edited the article - for legal reasons we can't post entire articles here without permission...sorry for having to edit it.

I chatted on the phone yesterday with a former NFL player of the Year, who happens to be related to my wife. Only Gale Sayers has been able to best his career Kick Off Return average. Who on this site has shared a personal story involving an NFL great? I guess if watching Vanished or reruns of Star Trek gets people excited than so be it.

Please no stories of how many NFL players your mothers slept with! [IMG]

    Doug, congratulations on your wife's-mother's-cousin.

Not sure how much excitement you can expect out of this crowd when the average age is hovering around 19 or 20 (if that) for a local honor.

My favorite paragraph from the article...

"He received a trophy from the Washington Touchdown Club as Player of the Year. ?I cherish that award. It is an award not many people receive,? he said. ?We didn?t get any endorsements like they do now, or the publicity. I?ve got my trophy put away and haven?t seen it for years. It is in the garage with the rest of the junk. I don?t go out and shine it up every week.?"

I met Bruce Hardy who played at Bingham H.S. here in the SL Valley & then w/ the 'phins. Hardy was on the cover of the Apr 29th, 1974 Sports Illustrated.

Additionally, I have met, talked with, & gotten Steve Young's autograph. This was before he hit it big w/ the 49ers. Too bad, I didn't get him to date his signature. Hello Ebay!

I met Jim Nantz who worked here in SLC before moving on to CBS. He was a smug idiot back then and appears to have gotten worse.

I really didn't expect anybody to get pumped up about the local honor, but I did expect a post or two or three just because I chatted on the phone with a former NFL MVP who happens to be a relative to my family. I gotta think that's pretty cool.

Lynn is very with it and plays golf three times a week. I'm sure he ment he cherished the award, but didn't have a whole lot of use for the trophy itself. I can understand that.

It is cool that your related to a former NFL MVP and we should have taken more notice. We should be telling the younger posters about the time when players toted the rock and it wasn't just a figure of speech. I'm sure Lynn Chandnois would have been a household name if more families would have had the NFL Sunday Ticket.

Sorry, Zach, couldn't resist. I am enjoying this thread now that I've seen it. I must have missed it the first time around.

Oops. I can honestly say I did not read that part. I know it sounds strange, but when I am extremely busy (and this week has been busier than most) I tend to just skim over things...all I saw was a man from the UP who did some good in the NFL - totally missed the relation part.

What can I say but :stupid:

Doing a little myspace research I see. Actually, Phil is my brother.

It probably didn?t come across, since looking back I didn?t write it, but it?s a pretty cool deal for you. I was commenting more on what seems to be a common theme on this board that anything that happened before the ?90?s isn?t relevant?

I knew what he meant, but it sure came out funny on paper. [IMG]
