<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Channing Frye spends a lot of time under the basket. And not by choice. While the developing center is looking to make contact, it is obvious he has not learned the proper response to all of the pushing and shoving in the lane. Frye is getting by with an extended wingspan for now, but summer league ends next week. "I really can't wait to get in the gym with him," said Knicks assistant Mark Aguirre, who's calling the shots during the Reebok Vegas Summer League. "He doesn't know the NBA game. He doesn't know leverage yet. He doesn't know angles yet. He doesn't know how to lock people yet. Those are all things you have to know, and he doesn't. But he will." Frye got into foul trouble yesterday but managed 14 points and six rebounds in a 90-87 win over Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic. A little more court time will solve a number of timing issues, but he's looking forward to learning a few tricks. It's a necessary part of adjusting to a game where everything happens quickly and forcefully. "It's way different, because coming from the Pac-10 they kind of keep it clean," Frye said. "It's a lot more physical, I think, here. It's not like a big deal. You just gotta go out there and get taught, and I haven't really had that opportunity." After the Knicks finish summer league play later this month he plans to head home to Phoenix and relax for a week. When the visit ends, Frye is heading for Chicago to work out under the guidance of Tim Grover, a personal trainer of note who prepped the University of Arizona product for the draft. Fine-tuning a 6-foot-11 frame might lessen the learning curve. "I don't think it's so much (about) weight as strength and explosion," he said. Aguirre is likely to drop in, as well. He's got a head full of practical advice, some of which helped Michael Sweetney take a step forward last season.</div> Source
I think he just needs time. He's showing some good signs and he is getting to the line 8 times a game in 25 minutes so far in the summer leagues. No need to worry, especially since we have Mark Aguirre around, too. He'll be alright.
So far I'm unimpressed with Fyre. He should be averaging a double double against this kind of competition. Yesterday he got about six rebounds which is a big improvement over his earlier three rebound performance but still underwhelming considering this is the summer league, even more underwhelming considering he's nearly seven feet tall. He's scoring right now simply because of his height and wingspan(and the way the games are being called) and that wont be a big advantage in the NBA. I like the free throw shooting and the jumpshooting but I'm pretty sure Isiah Thomas got him because he thought he could be a force in the paint and so far I havent seen anything that suggests that. David Lee has been more intriguing although he needs to finish better around the basket. Anyway I think Isiah Thomas should be fired.
