<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Dallas --- The Hawks' maddening pursuit of victory No. 1 this season took an unusual detour Thursday night.

Instead of packing up for the next stop on the loss parade just after halftime, the Hawks stuck around until the final minutes against the Dallas Mavericks.

The results were the same, an 87-78 loss this time for an 0-8 start. But the effort was different from Tuesday night's debacle in San Antonio.

The Hawks were within four points, 81-77, with 1:38 to play. But two free throws from Marquis Daniels provided the breathing room needed for the Mavericks, who moved to 6-2.

"We missed four of five free throws down the stretch, and we got beat on some offensive rebounds that really did us in," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said. "And we're beyond moral victories at this point. The only thing that will pick up our morale is winning a game. That's the only way we can break out of this funk."

Zaza Pachulia led the Hawks with a career-high 21 points and 12 rebounds. Joe Johnson added 18, and Al Harrington had 15 points and 10 rebounds. The rest of the team combined for only 24 points. Dallas scored 21 points off 19 Hawks turnovers.

The Hawks shot 38 percent from the floor and 1-for-9 from beyond the 3-point line.

For a team grinding for every single basket, they didn't take advantage of any fast-break opportunities. The Mavericks scored 17 fast-break points to the Hawks' six.

"All of our buckets come from hard work," Johnson said. "I think at times we do go in that self mode where we think we can do it ourselves. And everybody knows that when you move the ball on offense and share the ball, you make things easier on everybody. The shots will come. So until we figure that out as a team, I think we're going to continue to struggle." </div>
