Galloway willing to accept any role to win

Joey Galloway isn't concerned about personal status. A receiver can't join a crew that already features Randy Moss and Wes Welker and expect preferential treatment.

Galloway, whose signing was made official Thursday afternoon, spoke for the first time with New England Patriots reporters about what kind of role he expects to fill at 37 years old.

"There are a lot of playmakers on this offense and my focus is when I get there to be prepared and be ready to the best of my ability to do whatever it is that they ask me to do," Galloway said. "If that is to be third, fourth, fifth, it does not matter to me."

Galloway likely will be the Patriots' No. 3 receiver, replacing Jabar Gaffney in one of the NFL's most dangerous offenses. Some consider the addition of Galloway to be an upgrade over Gaffney.

Galloway's career has been based on speed. He owns a 15.7-yard average on his 682 career receptions. He has scored 77 touchdowns.

"I think offensively we have some weapons that have an opportunity to be pretty explosive if we can jell together and work things out," Galloway said.

But Galloway played only nine games last year for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers because of a foot injury. He caught 13 passes for 138 yards and zero touchdowns.

The Patriots, however, have a way of revitalizing players late in their careers. He's the oldest active receiver in the NFL. He'll turn 38 well before the end of the season.

"I love to compete," Galloway said. "I'm looking forward to a new challenge, a new situation. I'm looking forward to competing with a team that expects to win football games. This is what I do. This is my profession. Nothing has changed for me over the years. I have the same drive. I have the same focus. As long as a new challenge is in front of me and I physically and mentally feel very good, then I look forward to it."

But Galloway admitted he's gotten an added spark from the idea of playing with Tom Brady.

Galloway estimated he has caught passes from 23 quarterbacks over his 14 NFL seasons. The Associated Press reported the actual number at 18 quarterbacks. Either way, he wouldn't mind getting accustomed to one passer.

"I haven't had real quarterback stability in many of the places where I've been," Galloway said. "With Tom Brady being the guy here, absolutely I am looking forward to that."
