DaRizzle reminded me of a thread I meant to start a while ago. Anybody have any stories of their gambling exploits to share?
I'm a blackjack player. I often lose a little bit, but I won $145 the last time I went to Spirit Mountain, never been to Las Vegas. My favorite story was almost two years ago when one trip down there I lost a few dollars every time I sat down at the table, until one time I lost $200. Just before we were about to leave for home, I decided that since I was already down a decent amount, I wanted to be able to say that one time I bet the table max, so I put $250 down on one hand. I hit blackjack and won $375 and came out ahead for the trip!
i won $190 today playing poker at a casino in oklahoma about an hour away from dallas. i won't play anything but poker. i don't understand the point of playing anything else. even if you're playing perfect blackjack strategy, odds are that you lose money. every casino game is that way. with poker, you're not playing against the house so if you're good you can actually consistently win.
i agree on poker but you are still losing the rake, so in the long run poker is supposed to be worse than b/j or craps. my favorite gambling story of all time took place at spirit mountain. i was with two buddies that really wanted to go but i didn't. of course they talked me into driving down there. we were three college kids at the time with not alot of money to go around. i had exactly $3 in my pocket, so i sat around watching them play but decided to find a video poker machine. i wasn't paying attention and was betting the minimum, well i hit a straight flush that won me around 20 bucks. i cashed out the ticket and went over to roulette. i'd never played so i start putting down bets and hit my # a couple of times. i get bored with that and head for the poker room where i get a nice streak going for a while and walk out of there with around $150. i go to find a buddy and he's still playing blackjack and not ready to leave. i look across the way and there are two hot chicks playing b/j all by themselves so i head over and start to chat them up while playing. eventually their boyfriends come over and they peace out. i am about to leave the table when the dealer coments on my raiders jacket (this was back when they were good) so we start arguing about the raiders and i'm not even paying attention to my hands but he is playing them for me. i end leaving the table with $200 and decide to call it a night after starting with $3. i go to find my buddies, one lost $350 and the other $400 while we were there. needless to say i bought breakfast on the ride back.
"Let it Ride". My wife made $80 on the first day and $120 on her second day of our marriage weekend. I started it playing the same game too after being down $140 and made most of it back at $110. Its my poker game of choice to make money back on. Your 7 cards are the same ones you share with the dealers. You make the best hand of the 7 with 5. You get 3 spots on the board at $5 each. If you get a pair its a 1-1 payout ratio so you want to stay if you get a pair thats delt at you at first bet. Thats $15 easy. Scratch is when your two first cards are crap and you want to see what the next card is next so you have lost $5, and $10 on the table. Theres more to this game......I have found that "let it ride" has great reward for low risk. Its a poker game I recommend.
you are losing the rake, but it's also not a game with a set percentage that you win. if you're good, you can consistently win money playing. it all depends on how skilled you are at poker whether it's a good game for you to play and actually have a shot at winning money.
i've only seen let it ride played where you get three hole cards and the dealer shows two community cards. the betting goes you have a chance to pull back five after you see your three cards, than another chance to pull back a second bet after the first community card and the third is out there no matter what. i'd be interested to play it your way, where was that at?
oh, trust me, i've won much more than i've lost playing poker, and i can't really say the same for any other game in the casinos. it is a good game to play if you know what you are doing and it really comes down to the rest of your table and how good they are. then theres the luck factor but it is minimized as much as it can be in poker.
poker is no fun in vegas...I dont want to have to think! I love poker...just not in Vegas, too boring
damn!! i always come close to getting that much but never done it...i dont have any stories, but i need to go to more casinos that im allowed to play in. i could consistently win money in hold em
If consistently win, you mean a good percentage of the time you sit at the table you come up . . . I agree. I don't think you can win every time you sit at the table. You could play a few hands perfectly and still lose by a bad beat. Sometimes the cards just don't fall your way . . . Poker is my favorite, but can be slow . . . I win more often at poker . . . but I love craps.
I probably lost $100,000 playing poker over a period of a few years while working on "Bones." In September 2010, I started going to Gamblers Anonymous and haven't gambled since.
