The Red Sox once owned a double-digit lead in the AL East, butthe New York Yankees have closed within four games on thestrength of a 23-8 run since the All-Star break. Boston has won five of six against the Devil Rays this season,including all three meetings here. With a 17-2 record and 2.96 ERA in his career against Tampa Bay,Tim Wakefield (13-10, 4.81 ERA) will start for Boston in theopener of this three-game set. The knuckleballer is 8-3 in hislast 11 starts, but is trying to avoid losing consecutive startsfor the first time since early June. The 41-year-old was hit hard by the Los Angeles Angels ofAnaheim on Tuesday, allowing seven runs in four innings during a10-4 loss. Based on the recent history of the Boston bullpen, Eric Gagne inparticular, the longer Wakefield can go, the better. Acquired from Texas at the trade deadline, Gagne has given upruns in four of five games and pitched to a 15.75 ERA. Facingthe Baltimore Orioles on Sunday, he gave up a game-tying homerun to Miguel Tejada in the eighth inning. The Orioles laterwon on Kevin Millar's walk-off home run in the 10th. The righthander also allowed four runs in while retiring justone batter as the Red Sox squandered a four-run, eighth-inninglead in a 6-5 loss. "It's getting old. It's getting (expletive) ridiculous. That'swhat it's doing. It's getting (expletive) stupid," Gagne saidafter Sunday's loss. "We should have won three games out ofthree and I (expletive) blew two of them ... I'm not doing myjob right now. I'm letting everyone down." Tampa Bay starter James Shields (9-7, 4.32) is coming off asolid start on Wednesday against the Detroit Tigers. He allowedone run and five hits in seven innings during a 7-1 win. The Devil Rays are a major league-worst 19-39 on the road.
