<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">LOS ANGELES - Of the top 10 individual single-game scoring performances in Timberwolves history, Kevin Garnett -- the club's all-time points leader -- has three.

Garnett, a nine-time NBA All-Star over 11-plus seasons, has scored 40 points or more exactly three times in 855 regular-season games, not including the Wolves' visit Tuesday night to Staples Center to face the Los Angeles Lakers.

And through the team's first four games this season, their best player and the focal point of Minnesota's offense had taken a modest 55. His average of 13.8 field-goal attempts per game again is way low, compared to NBA scoring stars such as Allen Iverson (22.3 entering Tuesday), Joe Johnson (22.0), Carmelo Anthony (21.5), LeBron James (21.0) and Ray Allen (20.0). Even top power forwards such as Jermaine O'Neal (16.7), Dirk Nowitzki (16.0) and Chris Bosh (15.7) had helped themselves to more scoring chances.

Granted, Garnett's average is dragged down a bit by the nine shots he took in the opener. But it's a familiar topic when Garnett's various attributes are discussed: Could he score more? And, should he?

"You always want Kevin Garnett to be a greedy player, so to speak," coach Dwane Casey said. "But he's never going to be that. He's just an unselfish player, a team player. He's a quarterback. I don't know if he's ever going to attempt 30-40 attempts."

Yet in Garnett's MVP season (2003-04), he had his greatest success -- team (58-24) and individual (24.2 ppg) -- when he took a personal-high 19.6 shots per game. And that's the season when, with Sam Cassell and Latrell Sprewell around, he felt the least burden to score.

"My style is to score. I don't want you to misconstrue that," Garnett said this week. "But the thing is, compared to an A.I. [Iverson], compared to a real scorer, I'm [defending] the best offensive player on the other end, and sometimes that wears me out a little bit. Messing with Zach [Randolph] for 37-plus minutes ain't an easy task. It becomes a little toll." </div>

So far this season his PPG is like double his FGA/G (not really, but still, it's close). I mean really you'd think he should take more shots, and if the team starts losing, it's something that will become a bigger focal point, especially since he's been so efficient (last year too).
