i bet fisher really wants to stay, because it would be sh*t for his career to go to the hawks, you can tell from him crying with kobe that he really wants to win,so i bet he really really doesnt want to go to a uncontending championship team.

Aaron Goodwin, the agent for Gary Payton, told ESPN's David Aldridge Tuesday afternoon that Payton has chosen to sign a free-agent contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, despite L.A.'s financial limitations.

The Lakers, well over the NBA's $40-plus million salary cap, were limited to offering Payton a starting salary of $4.9 million for next season. It is believed Payton will sign a multiyear deal with the dethroned champions on July 16, the first day teams are permitted to formally sign free agents.

"He could have taken a lot more money to go somewhere else," Goodwin told ESPN.com, referring to efforts by the Portland Trail Blazers to acquired Payton in a sign-and-trade with Milwaukee. "But he's going to Los Angeles to follow his dream."

It would be a good team but they may not ne able to stick together that long,

    Malone - 39
Payton 35 turning 36 this month
    Shaq -31
    Kobe-25

Kobe has shown to us how much he can lead this team by himself, they'll het a few ring but may be relying on the lottery when shaq goes.

When shaq goes they will have loads of cap space...Lakers likely won't ever be in the lottery...

The only thing the Lakers care about now is the present.

thats so stupid. San antonio still has tim duncan and theyre about to sign better players than the lakers just signed. it is unfair that they get these guys at bargain basement prices. itmakes me lose some respect for them even though theyre taking less money. i just hate sports monopolys. the yankees are bad enough. the celtics are the yankees of basketball and they never did it all with free agent signings

hmmm lemme get this straight...so its "ok" for the spurs to sign players that are better...but its not for the lakers? is that what you're saying?

lemme just make sure i'm getting this right...now that the lakers have won 3 rings this decade, they shouldn't be allowed to win anymore?

and another thing, if jason kidd signs with the spurs for less money than he could get at NJ, would that make you lose respect for him too?

Of course not, they just used a little something called territorial draft rights which means if they convince a certain player to go to a college within a certain distance of them then they have the right to draft them. That's probably a big reason why Cousy and Havliciek went to Holy Cross, and it's the same reason why Red Auerbach along with many more NBA teams tried to get Wilt to go to a college near them.

thats not fair thats totally not what i meant mel. i dint say they should just stop winning. im saying its frustrating to other teams they can just go out and sign an all star team and not even have to pay top dollar. same witht hte spurs but then tehy didnt just three peat
