Celtics/Lakers: Evaluate a "Rumor"! I got this off NBA Wire's Lakers Board. I'm just sharing the scenario because it would be something to talk about, IMO. My feelings about the trade scenario are posted below the quote. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> Caron1: I have an inside source for the Celtics who has confirmed Boston and LA are in trade talks right now. The deal was arranged last week but sat all weekend without action, and is expected to hit the media this week even if it does not go through. The proposed deal would send PG Marcus Banks PG Chucky Atkins C Chris Mihm and 1 more player to be announced FOR PG Gary Payton and SF Rick Fox personally I dont know how I feel about this. I would have hoped Payton could be a piece in posibly trading for Kidd, but if they are intent on this deal then we have to think about Banks potential as PG of the future sharing time with Sasha. Banks is one of the fastest guys in the league and was a star at UNLV 2 years ago, but he supposedly has a bad attitude. I donno, how do you guys feel about this? </div> While I think someone came up with a brilliant FU angle in remarking that losing GP would essentially be a guaranteed loss of Malone, This trade sucks. First: RICK FOX???? <font color="DarkRed">NO</font>. Sorry. That bridge has been burned, Folks. I could believe any rumor out of LALA land to here right now, but not one that involved "the Man in Black". The reason this is going to hit the press rumor mill by months end is because this person tried to push it out there by circulating it via an internet rumor. Some reporters going to inquire about it to the respective teams and then those teams going to end up "no comment" ing it into legitimacy. I think it's bogus and makes no sense to boot. Celtic fans would hammer relentlessly on Rick Fox. I know I would.
If this happens I would take back every good thing I'd ever said about Ainge. Why would <u>anyone</u> want RICK FOX back, or want Gary Payton. I know it's a bogus rumor, but Ainge gives up on last years first round draft pick and Mihm for two over the hill guys who had horrible years last season. But the Laker fan who posted this was cracking me up. "I would have hoped Payton could be a piece in posibly trading for Kidd." Who would be the backup PG, Delonte West? Ainge can't make this trade, and I have faith he won't.
Payton isnt what he used to be, but is still a premier point gaurd who can groom Delonte West and Tony Allen into good players so he's the only good part of the deal. Rick Fox can't play, Devean George played better than him. The Celtics would be giving up a stellar young PG in Marcus Banks and a underrated player in Mihm. IMHO the Celtics would get raped if this deal went through.
This sounds to me like the Celtics and the Lakers are using each other to advertise to the league who they might be willing to give up. If so, Danny Ainge has learned a veteran GM tactic. Beyond that, Gary Payton might be a good fit as the veteran point guard (rather than Chuckie Atkins) to tutor the young guards on the Celtics' roster. But then it would only make sense to trade Marcus Banks if the Celtics brain trust either doesn't believe in Banks, or has fallen in love with Delonte West.
IMO, This trade makes no sense at all! It can't be true, there is no way. It goes against everything that Danny Ainge has done to this point. I agree with ThickNThin about how this may be a tactic to let other teams know what they are willing to deal. I know this trade would never happen, but if it ever did....I will become a bigger Ainge-basher than Birdman!
44caliber, i dont think these trade rumor has any bit of truth to it. But i could see why ainge would do it. I still think Gary has 2 more good years left in him. The lakers were a bad fit for him. The new run and gun celtics would love to have another scorer who can run and make sound choices with the ball gary would provide that. If this trade does happen, which it wont, we would also need to sign Bob Sura a guy who i like to be back up.
Ha NBAWire. I thought that I was the only one that knows of that place. It's basically just like the old SLAM boards, with 12 year old kids posting stuff about Pokemon. I would never trust the rumors that come out of there.
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">. I would never trust the rumors that come out of there.</div> Yeah, neither do I, but it provided good comedy relief.
Well, the rumor is spreading and changing. Hoopshype has picked it up. See my thoughts and link here http://www.celticsblog.com/
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting ranter:</div><div class="quote_post">Now it looks like Ainge is hot after Shareef Abdur-Rahim again</div> Really? That would be great for Boston, as long as they don't send off Pierce. SAR will make an impact instantly and be a great complement to Pierce.
AHHH, unless this is part of a trade to come, what is Ainge thinking, just been confirmed on ESPN. Lakers trade: Gary Payton, Rick Fox, 2005 lottery protected first rounder Celtics trade: Chucky Atkins, Chris Mihm, Marcus Banks
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The Lakers, in need of a big man since trading Shaquille O'Neal to Miami last month, had to give up Gary Payton to get one. An NBA source told ESPN.com's Bill Simmons that the Celtics have dealt Chris Mihm (in a sign-and-trade), guards Marcus Banks and Chucky Atkins and a future second-round pick to Los Angeles for Payton, Rick Fox and a lottery-protected first-round draft pick. Boston also receives cash in the deal, ESPN.com has confirmed through a high-ranking Celtics source.</div> <div align="center">Link</div>
The Deal Shapes out like this: Lakers Acquire: G Marcus Banks G Chucky Atkins C Chris Mihm Boston Acquires: G Gary Payton F Rick Fox A conditional No. 1 pick (lottery protected in 2005, top-10 protected in 2006, top-three protected in 2007, unprotected after that) and cash To me I see this benefiting the Lakers more than it does the Celtics. Ainge gave up on Banks, and seems to prefer West over him. I don't see this trade making much sense for the Celtics. Some think otherwise. Here's Bill Simmons, Page 2, 3 reasons on why the Celts did this deal: <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">1. They wanted to clear cap space for 2005. Not only are Payton and Fox coming off the cap next summer, but Fox can either retire or accept a buyout before then, if he wants to concentrate on his budding acting career (look out Denzel!). Now they have just four major contracts after 2005 -- Paul Pierce (making the max); Mark Blount (just signed a six-year, $38.6 million deal); Raef LaFrentz (we don't want to talk about this one); and Ricky Davis (who could be the next to go). Assuming the Celtics can move Davis, they will be under the cap next summer for the first time since Michael Jackson looked relatively normal. 2. The first-round pick. Seriously ... who knows with the Lakers? How will Kobe's trial play out? How will a team with 25 new players mesh? Are they even a playoff team in the loaded West? And with Mitch Kupchak running the show, doesn't the old Unseld Corollary -- "It never hurts to have a future No. 1 pick from the Bullets, if only because Wes Unseld is running the Bullets" -- come into play here? At best, they're a seventh or eighth seed in the West, which would put the pick in the mid-teens this season. But why even take it now? Why not roll the dice and hope the Lakers stink one of these years? Al Jefferson showed the Celtics he's ready to contribute. (Note: Hopefully the Celts learned their lesson from the Chris Wallace Debacle a few years ago, when Wallace could have kept rolling over a future No. 1 from the Nuggets. Instead, he used it in 2001 to select Kedrick Brown, who eventuallly became the Cal Ripken Jr. of the NBA's Summer League. And by the way, the Nuggets picked fifth and third in the following two years. I'm still in therapy.) 3. They're getting a one-year look at GP. Best-case scenario: He hooks himself up to the Juvenation Machine and becomes their second offensive option. Worst-case scenario: He looks like the same GP from the 2004 playoffs. </div>

i see, the reason is we need to make some room for the rookies and for the future because payton and fox might retire before or this season.
Unless Ainge is using Payton as trade bait, he's making an amazingly dumb move. If you trade him, you could possibly send him and fillers to Portland for Stoudamire and SAR or something like that, and I wouldn't be surprised if Indiana was interested in him too.
what is ainge thinkin?! he gives up a great PG who can start in banks and his backup in atkins. he also gives up a underrated C in mihm who was finally showing some lottery pick potential. instead he gets one of the best PG's in history who is good no more and the worst players for the lakers last season in payton and fox. i just don't get it
