Genoa sign Thiago Motta

Genoa have completed the free transfer of former Barcelona midfielder Thiago Motta.

The Brazilian has had a torrid time with injuries in recent years, first leaving the Blaugrana for Atletico Madrid, where he was unable to get anywhere near back to his best due to further injury troubles.

His contract ran out this summer and he is a free agent. Many clubs, such as Juventus and Milan, were linked with a possible swoop for his services, but it is Genoa who have taken a chance on the 26-year-old, signing him on a surprisingly long contract of four years.

The imposing midfielder has been close to a move for a few days now, but the Grifone wanted to be convinced that the player would be able to sustain a satisfactory level of fitness before completing the deal.

Motta will join fellow La Liga star Diego Milito at the club, who returned to his beloved club from relegated Real Zaragoza. Other signings include Matteo Ferrari picked up from Roma, Raffaele Palladino and Ruben Olivera from Juventus, Parma's Andrea Gasbarroni and more.

The signing was announced following Genoa's impressive 2-0 win over a perpetually struggling Milan side this afternoon.
