The Giants are easy to figure out. Their pitching remains ahead of their hitting. And until the imbalance is corrected even partially, their dreams of returning to the postseason for the first time since 2003 will remain a fantasy.

San Francisco entered the All-Star break ranked 11th in runs scored and 10th in OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) while having grounded into the most double plays in the National League. By contrast, the Giants' ERA was the league's third best; they had allowed fewer hits than any Major League team except San Diego; and they led the NL in saves. It was no accident that San Francisco's All-Star representatives, ace Tim Lincecum and closer Brian Wilson, are both pitchers.

With their pitching, the Giants might need only a nominal offensive upgrade to apply more pressure on the NL West-leading Padres.

"We're trying to figure out every way to score the four-plus runs that we need," general manager Brian Sabean said, referring to the Giants' ongoing search for a steady lineup and suggesting that a little could mean a lot when it comes to adding a hitter through trade.
