Giggs: Berbatov Can Be United Legend

Manchester United veteran Ryan Giggs - the most honour-laden player in English football history - sees no reason why his club’s new signing, Dimitar Berbatov, can’t be an instant hit at Old Trafford, and go on to become one the Red Devils’ legends.

Dimitar Berbatov’s protracted transfer from reluctant sellers Tottenham Hotspur to long-time admirers Manchester United was finally concluded on transfer deadline day, and now that the Bulgarian is a United player, new team-mate Ryan Giggs reckons he will wow the Old Trafford faithful.

Welshman Giggs told The Sun: "Dimitar is a quality player and definitely a Man United player.

"He's got that presence being a big lad and he's a little bit different to Carlos Tevez and Wayne Rooney in that respect.

"Hopefully he'll do well for us — and I'm sure he will.

"He'll add to our attacking options, that's for sure."

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson eventually bought Berbatov for £30.75million despite late interest from Manchester City, the Scottish manager having personally shown the the best of United to his top summer target.

Giggs is convinced Ferguson always gets his man if he is convinced the player concerned will improve the quality of the United squad.

Regarding the Berbatov move, Giggs commented: "I didn't know the move was going to happen but there are no surprises in football these days.

"There's some quality players out there and the manager always identifies them if he thinks they can add to the team."

Looking ahead to next May, Giggs acknowledges that the task facing United in defending the two major trophies ther won last season will be tough.

The 34-year-old said: "It's going to be hard, like it is each season — there's some very good teams out there.

"It went to the final day in the league last season and we won the European Cup on penalties.

"So you need to be injury-free and to have a little bit of luck, but if all those things go for us we'll have a great chance."
