Gilbert Arenas recently announced he plans to opt out of his contract at the end of next season. That being so, might the Wizards be convinced to swap him for, say, Jason Richardson, Patrick O'Bryant, and a future pick? It sounds crazy at first, but consider...

Richardson for all his shortcomings is likely an all star in the east, and essentially becomes Washington's go to scorer.

The Wizards are notoriously thin up front. The prospect of a young, talented center with O'Bryant's wingspan is likely very seductive.

Following Gil's knee injury, and his announcement that he will opt out, management may get spooked and want to get something back on their investment. Especially considering this year is considered a good year for point guards. Pruitt, Brooks, and Law are all expected to be availible at the Wiz's pick.

For the Warriors, they ship out a couple players who don't really fit in Nelson's system for one who I'm sure he'd be ecstatic to have.

The Warriors actually shave a bit of salary by doing this, and it allows them to role out this lineup:

    PG Baron Davis
    SG Gilbert Arenas
    SF Stephen Jackson
    PF Al Harrington
    C Andris Biedrins

Or, perhaps, that isn't small and quick enough for your taste. How about this?

    PG Baron Davis
    SG Monta Ellis
    SF Gilbert Arenas
    PF Matt Barnes
    C Al Harrington

I have a feeling that the Wizards could get better than that for Arenas. A lot of teams are going to be asking about him.

If the Wizards wanted to trade Arenas, which I doubt they will, could get alot more for him. Arenas at this point has every intention of returning to DC, despite the opt out. If he leaves it will probabely be through free agency becuase I doubt he'll have made up his mind until he hears other offers.

In general I'd stay away from Gilbert unless we could get him extremely cheap. In Nellie's system the guards have to do more than just score, they need to help in other areas since we're playing so small. Gilbert is extremely one dimensional despite being such a physical specimen at PG. It would be nice to have a dominating scorer like him but I just don't know if he would work out on our team. We need the ball to be in Baron's hands or constantly moving to find the best shot and both of those will be heavily disrupted if Gil comes. Not to mention Arenas will still opt out even if he comes here, then he'd just walk on us again if we didn't pay him a max contract and that would screw up our cap pretty well.

Scoring isn't a huge problem for us and we have Baron and Monta who are similar types of players but not as one dimensional. We need more players to rebound, defend, and give an inside presence instead of guys who do nothing but jack up shots and feed into their egos. Baron clearly proved in the POs this year that hes the guy who we need to build around, I think a decent big would make much more difference for this team than another perimeter player, even one as good as Gilbert.

That sounds like me back in 2002. Good luck with keeping Gilbert, he's going to leave if hes offered a bigger contract somewhere else. This really puts the Wiz in a bad situation though, if they don't have the money to re-sign him then it would be wise of them to trade him before he walks but now his trade value is greatly reduced. Just another self centered act by Gil.

When Gilbert played for the Golden State Warriors, the Warriors were not close to becoming contendors and coudn't offer Arenas a big contract. Since he was on the Wizards he took his game and the team to another level. This shares very little resembelance to Golden State's situation with Arenas.

Wizards do have enough money to resign Arenas to a nice and satisfying contract and if he leaves I will be surprised.

Gilbert == Allen Iverson. Interpret that however one would like.

I wouldn't trust him to run the show or be second banana to anyone.

Ah, I think us Warriors fans might be a little too bitter on the guy, just a bit. I still like him, at least.

Yeah, I like his game, but he's too much a reminder of all those typical athletes that say they want to win and they seem to be in it more for the money than anything else. What about for the good of the team? That's why Tim Duncan is one of my favorite franchise players. Coach says come off the bench, he comes off it. He's probably the most dominant big man in the nba and he leaves enough room on his deal so Ginobilli and Parker can fit on the payroll as well.

I just don't seen Gilbert Arenas in that same light. He seems more concerned with making green and being on the cover of some video game than he does about any one team. He says he wants to win a championship like Dwayne Wade, but he's not even that mentality. He'd probably be feuding with Shaq. But that's just my opinion of his character. I don't know what he's about really. And that's before reading the commentary from the sports columnists.

Like Run BMJ said, unless we can get him for cheap, there really isn't a reason to pursue for Arenas. For one thing, I have no idea how both Davis and Arenas can share the ball together when both love to message the ball for 15 seconds. Then, people criticize Richardson’s defense. But, Arenas’ defense make Richardson’s like Bowen’s. We can resign Monta cheaper instead of paying Arenas for 18 mils per year for next 6 years. And, it’s not like we have any room to take yet another max contract…

Before his second child's birth, Gilbert was willing to take paycuts for the Wizards to win. Gilbert wants to win even if it does mean not being the #1 option which he shared with Antawn Jamison in 04-05. It's not so much about Gilbert getting a full contract, but him getting a longer contract that will keep him in the league for a good amount of time so that he can support his kids.

BTW, Gilbert has only once got into an argument with his teammates and that was with Kwame Brown who has been accused of making the whole story up.

The Wizards aren't close to becoming contenders either. It's not like they're poised to advance in the POs. The Warriors made the POs this year, too, and they aren't close to becoming contenders. The Wizards just play in the very weak East -- they were 41-41 -- not like they're ready to win a championship lol. Taking the Wizards to another level was easy -- he took them from horrible to mediocrity. I'll bet if he had a chance to come to the West, he'd take it if the money is right. He loves a challenge.

The Washington Wizards record does not reflect their season, for the most part they had an injury prone season. While the Wizards were healthy however, they were first in the East. Washington is one or two key players away from being able to contend for a championship. If the Cleveland Cavaliers could make it to the NBA finals so could the Washington Wizards.

You're being sarcastic right? The average person in the U.S makes $25,000 a year. The second Gil signed his first contract he had no problem supporting his kids.

I agree the Wizards are just two players away from contending. Tim Duncan and Lebron James should do it.

The Dubs had an injury prone season if they had not .... i am sure they would have swept Utah and taken the SPurs to 6

The Warrios healthy were 15-6 or so..... hottest team in the league to end the season.
    j/k

Arenas ain't no Lebron, as good as he is, i just dont see the talent with the Whiz.... Jamison and Butler are ok..... then what ?.... and Cleve has a much better bench and depth.

Man, I knew that raising a kid can be expensive. But, I didn't know that it would take more than 65 mils (which is Arena's original contract) to support two kids... Arenas would have opted out regardless of how many kids he has. Because, by doing so, he can get far more money than what he is getting now, which is totally understandable. The problem is that if he is going to opt out anyway, he shouldn't have said something like he will get a paycut for Wiz or he will opt out if Wiz don't improve (then he announced his intention to opt out anyway even before Wiz can make any move)...

Well i'm surprised you believe that Jamison and Butler are only okay..

The Wizards are a good team lacking on key component that seperates them from the next level. A post scorer, it's been relevant through the past three years that this is what we need then our offense would be unstopabble.

To be a contender you have to contend -- you need a realistic shot at winning. Heck -- the Warriors could make the NBA finals in the mediocre east -- but once they got there, they'd get swept like any other eastern team.

winning the Eastern Conference championship and contending for an NBA Title are 2 vastly different things -- one can be done by a good but NOT great team, while the other takes the complete package at the right time, something Washington does not have IMO.
