Bulls guard Kendall Gill admitted his recent demotion from the starting lineup caught him by surprise, so he approached coach Scott Skiles to discuss the situation in a professional manner.

Then Gill went nuts Tuesday. He scored a season-high 29 points while leading the Bulls (7-16) to a 102-88 victory over the Orlando Magic (4-21). Gill was 12-of-13 from the field in the second half, and it's a safe bet he'll be starting tonight in Detroit.

''I was surprised [about the demotion],'' Gill said. ''But I handled it the way I always do, like a pro. We talked briefly about it. I'm not going to go through newspapers and all that crap. If I have a problem, I'll go in and talk to the coach.

''I still feel like I'm about to take my game to another level.''

Gill took his entire team to another level. Not only did he shoot lights-out, but Gill also held Tracy McGrady to eight second-half points. McGrady finished with 26.

''I feel like I'm 25 every day, but today I felt like I was 22,'' said the 35-year-old Gill, who scored 27 of his points in the second half.

I don't forsee this as a problem. Gill is a professional and a veteran. He will handle the act with class. But I must admit, I am surprised. Why bench a guy who played good defense and had a season high?

Unlike Jalen Rose, Jamal Crawford, ect. this doesn't seem like a problem. Gill understands that you need to try new things to win games. This isn't the Gendall Gill show, it's the Bulls. And he understands that.
