I still wonder why Theo never tagged Sandberg for that position, maybe he'd feel threatened with a HOF person aboard the Cubs Staff.
I think Prince Valiant has flaws. The Cubs knew this at the time, and I don't think it had anything to do with his experience.
I don't know much about the Cubs but they seem to have a decent farm and if he could somehow get them a WS win he would become a legendary manager, which is a good challenge, hell if he just got them to the big show it would be huge, and they have great fans, and they would pay him well, and it's his hometown... so there is some big incentives there. And considering this Arod thing, and the crappy farm in NY, and Mo leaving, and the WS win under his belt here.. the more I think about it what reason does he have to stay? if the Cubs offer the money they may have him IMO.
He had never managed before, the first time he wanted to manage the team. They hired him to manage In the minors. He had two years experience when Sveum was hired. He had 4 total. http://www.bleedcubbieblue.com/2013/8/16/4628722/ryne-sandberg-named-new-phillies-manager
With the recent death of his father he really doesn't have much left in Chicago. Plus I think I just read somewhere that they recently bought a new home in Westchester & his kids love it here.
"“Our home has been here (in Westchester),” Girardi said. “My kids are engrossed in schools here. We haven’t (lived in) Chicago since 2006. The only person who’s really there, my brother’s still there, a couple brothers are there, (but) my father’s gone, my mother’s gone. There’s not as much there as there used to be.”
Thanks, that's good news for Yankee fans, a pretty big indication that he wants to stay, as long as NY pays him, and they will, they need him more than ever.
