General Motors Co. will recall as many as 69,633 vehicles that may experience a sudden failure of electronic power steering while driving, an expansion of an earlier callback.

The models affected include the Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx built from April 1 to June 30, 2006, as well as Pontiac G6 models assembled from April 18 to June 30, 2006, according to a letter filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. GM will notify owners of the defect and replace the torque sensor assembly without charging for the fixes.

“If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash,” Jennifer Timian, chief of NHTSA’s recall management division, said in the letter.
