Gallas is a goner from the Gunners

Arsenal have released French defender William Gallas after failing to reach an agreement over a new contract.

Gallas joins Chelsea’s Joe Cole and Michael Ballack as the most high-profile casualties as Premier League clubs release 124 players from their contracts this summer.

The 32-year-old France star had been demanding a new two-year contract on wages of £80,000 a week.

Chairman Peter Hill-Wood said last month: “His demands are extravagant and I don’t think we are prepared to go along with it. He is a good player, but you have got to draw the line somewhere.”

Along with Sol Campbell, Mikael Silvestre and Phillipe Senderos, who has joined Fulham, Arsenal have released six players.

When the Premier League list was compiled Manchester United defender Gary Neville was also listed as being released. He has since signed a one-year deal.

101 games with the team spanning four seasons.

Given the #10 jersey at his debut.

Promoted to captain after one season.

Relieved of the captaincy in 2008.

One of the best defenders in Arsenal history.

Unfortunately most will remember him for his fit v Birmingham City.

For me this makes our decision to sell Kolo Toure more perplexing. We should've known Gallas' wage demands would be too high. Or did Wenger want to be rid of both of them?

I find it hard to believe we can find an equal or better defender on the market for what Man City paid for Toure.

I don't think keeping Toure was ever possible. I believe he used his 'issue with certain teammates' makes a perfect excuse to head off to money-throwing Citeh.
