Was he the guy who died when his motorcycle ran out of gas in death valley?

    yes.

Evan Tanner was more than an MMA fighter. MMA fighting was a hobby he did and a way to earn cash. He was an adventurer who would try just about anything that was adventurous or inspiring.

he was also an alcoholic and at time self-destructive, but his heart was always huge as he would literally give you the shirt off his back if you needed it more than he did.

He even started a charity MMA gym for youth at risk.

Many ppl in the MMA community find him to be an inspiring person.

My brother's friend Ian was out there with him when he died. They were camping and Tanner took his motorcycle and went off on his own for a ride. He ran out of gas then ran out of water trying to walk back to camp. I guess he died only a short distance from where his friends were. Sad story.

Tanner was pretty strange IRL, apparently. Ian says he used to go out into the woods and stay there alone for hours or even days talking to nature, meditating, and w/e.
