<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">"He had his mother's class ring on and he caught it on a nail," explained his father, Gerald Sr.

Gerald was attempting to dunk on a Nerf-type hoop in his bedroom.

"They couldn't reattach it," said Gerald Sr. "They had to shave it. That was a long night. It was just a tragic time."

Young Gerald now expertly hides that ring finger on his right hand. He had to get used to playing without the tip of his finger on his shooting hand.

That may be one reason why early in his career Gerald couldn't even make the team. He was cut altogether as a freshman at Dobie High in Houston and the next year was a mid-season addition to the sophomore team.

Mr. Green was hesitant to go into much details.

When asked if the finger injury was the reason his son was cut, he said, "I'll let you put that together. ... It's just the way people perceive you."</div> http://www.ecnnews.com/cgi-bin/15/etstory....nnh.0630+page_1

Ouch! I can imagine that had to be a long night for him and his family. It really is amazing how he has bounced back from that. Most people couldn't adjust to having 4 fingers on their dominant hand. Green adapted well enough to play basketball though.

I had heard on draft night that that was the reason a lot of teams has passed on him, and my brother brought this point to my attention. I said, "well that's stupid, we already know he can play." Case closed.

Why would a GM be put-off by that? Especially when they had already seen his game?

    I don't get it.

You actually only need the first 3 fingers(including your thumb) to shoot the ball. the last 2 are not necessary. Mad props to GG for overcoming that. Mad props.

he said you only need the first 3 to shoot but it's obviously easier with all 5.

Duh, he overcame everything. Getting cut as a freshman. And I'm sure a lot of people told him "You're not gonna be in the NBA missing a finger". Anybody making it to the NBA has to overcome a lot. Start thinking.

yes you really only need three fingers to effectively shoot the ball-point blank this cat is a player whether he has one or 18 fingers on one hand.
