Grizzlies trade point guard Kyle Lowry for first-round pick

The only player Memphis was likely to move at the NBA's trade deadline indeed received a change of address.

Grizzlies reserve point guard Kyle Lowry was traded this afternoon to Houston in a three-way transaction with Orlando. The Griz received Orlando's first-round pick. Houston received Lowry and Orlando forward Brian Cook.

Orlando walked away with Houston point guard Rafer Alston.

Reportedly, there are other minor players involved to make the finances work.

Lowry recently returned from a sprained right ankle but was relegated to limited minutes behind starting point guard Mike Conley after Lionel Hollins took over as coach. Since Hollins replaced Marc Iavaroni, the Griz seemed more inclined to play veteran Marko Jaric, who is owed more than $7 million in each of the next two seasons and owns an undesirable contract to cash-strapped NBA owners.

So Lowry, the 24th pick in 2006 draft, became expendable.

"We're happy to have an opportunity to get a fresh start," said Lowry's agent, Andy Miller. "This is a great opportunity for Kyle and I'm grateful to the Grizzlies for that."
