Hamburg's Petric Leads The Way

Unirea Urziceni 0-2 Hamburg

A double-strike from HSV striker Mladen Petric proved enough to see the Bundesliga side through to the Group stage of this season’s Uefa Cup.

Urziceni trainer Dan Petrescu made two changes to the side that drew 0-0 at the HSH Nordbank Arena with Brandan and Burns coming in for Paduretu and Apostol.

HSV trainer Martin Jol also made a double change to the side that beat Mönchengladbach at the weekend with Olic and Thiago Neves giving way to Piotr Trochowski and Paulo Guerrero.

First Half

The German visitors quickly found their feet in the game and soon had a dangerous effort on the Urziceni goal. With just four minutes on the clock Petric sent a header just wide following a cross from Jansen. Soon after Trochowski failed with a free kick that flew just wide.

After ten minutes, the Romanians started to find their way into the game with Mara sending a header wide after good work from Bilasco. The home side gained in confidence but were finding it difficult to break down a resolute Hamburg defence.

Unirea then went very close to opening the scoring on 20 minutes when a long ball over the HSV defence saw Frank Rost and Timothee Atouba clearing at the last moment.

It was however the visitors who took the lead on 27 minutes just when it looked like the home side were gaining the upper hand. A couple of headers from Jansen and Mathijsen found their way to Croatian striker Petric, who volleyed in from six meters to give Martin Jol’s side the lead and a vital away goal.

Having taken the lead the German side then sat back a little and controlled the game from the back and Urziceni were unable to make their superiority in territory count. Balan twice wasted a chance to equalise with first Reinhardt, then Atouba blocking at the decisive moment. HSV were able though to calm the game down in the closing moments of the first half.

Second Half

It took just five minutes after the restart for Hamburg to double their lead. Guerrero sent a great pass through to Petric, who fired into the far corner to hand the Rothosen a massive advantage. HSV kept their pressure up with keeper Arlauskis having to punch away from Mathijsen following a Trochowski free kick.

The German side had the game in hand and allowed very few chances to their Romanian hosts. A header from Mehmedovic on 63 minutes was a rare chance for the home side.

Marcell Jansen hit the outside of the net for Hamburg following good work from Guerrero, while Bilasco also went close in the closing stages with a header on 87 minutes.
