    "There's a favorite memory Dan Cortes carries from his 5 innings last year with the Seattle Mariners.

    No, it wasn't his first major league appearance, even though he set down the Tampa Bay Rays in order that first inning. The memory is from his second game, two nights later.

    "I struck out three guys in a row," Cortes said, beaming. "I was like 'Oh, my gosh, no way! I didn't do that in the minor leagues!' "

    The 23-year-old rookie nearly walked on air back to the dugout, where Felix Hernandez was waiting with a pin, having read the hype on young Cortes.

    "Felix came up to me and said, 'Hey, you still haven't thrown 100 mph yet, what's the deal?' " Cortes said."
