I went from Mad magazine to National Lampoon to R. Crumb and Zap comics and the Tales from the Crypt Horror comics...and then one day saw a cover with a nose to the grindstone ..the Hustler Work issue.....I took notice and next thing you know I'm reading Charles Bukowski novels ...go figure! RIP Larry....you old perv!
He probably had to marry 5 wifes' because he knocked them all up. I do like his zeal to impeach Trump before it crossed into Pelosi's mind.
He was a great man. Also Hugh Hefner and Helen Gurley Brown. It's beyond the common imagination now, but there was once a time when heterosexuals could be sexual revolutionaries.
I use to subscribe to his magazine when I was in college. I finally dropped my subscription when I realized it was a bit too raunchy.
Hats were specifically referenced. I understand free speech means defending precisely what is odious. But if a man published magazine and video of animals being raped and tortured for amusement, would he be considered a hero? No, only when it's women. He had the legal right to publish and I have the legal right to say decent people don't read that garbage.
I haven't read many Hustler mags....usually skimmed the cartoons and captions when I was really young.....I sure don't remember torture issues or rape..the nose to the grindstone cover was gross and shocking but I sure never forgot seeing it..I do remember things like that from movies like Silence of the lambs though....it's all over the horror film industry....movies like 8MM.....to me Hustler was exactly like a Quentin Tarantino production...shock value by exaggeration....my experience with Edgar Alan Poes novels would also be categorized as torture...Pit and the Pendulum....etc.....censorship is sometimes tricky...I'm not a fan of graphic violence in film or art I am sure I'd look back on some of those issues and find them to be in bad taste now...
Difference between Poe and Hustler is Poe was horror. It was not intended to be a sexual turn on. And stupid S2 keeps changing Poe to Pie. I suppose a really bad pie could be horrible.
I think they were both intended to shock the reader ....as I said...I haven't read enough Hustler to have felt offended other than shock I get from horror in general....Flynt was into porno but to me Hustler wasn't about that as much as parody..
After the Christian terrorist paralyzed him for life, Flynt managed to barely stay alive for decades. He was shot around when Marvin Gaye was killed by his demanding Christian fascist father, a couple of years after a Christian terrorist killed John Lennon.
I never did read it. Only looked at the pictures. I saw nothing of women being abused as you said. Of course, I subscribed in the early 70s. I don't subscribe to anyone being abused except Trump.
When the big CIA revelations emerged from the Watergate hearings, most original investigatory articles revealing the information were published in Penthouse, Hustler, and a few in Playboy. The intelligence agencies steered authors in that direction, knowing that the articles wouldn't be read, or discussed on talk shows by guests who didn't want to admit reading those magazines.
As a result of no one reading the CIA revelations, no-picture versions of those magazines began in the late 70s. Morons on TV news ridiculed it..."Why would a dirty magazine leave out the pictures? Ha ha." Because academics wanted to study the information, that's why. College libraries subscribed.
