I know Kevin Garnett took a pay cut from the Timberwolves which Garnett agreed with so that they can get more cap space to sign other players. I was wondering if anyone knows how this works becuz I would really like Brian Grant to take like a 2-3 million pay cut maybe a year later so that the lakers can get some cap room. The best situation would be for Brian Grant to opt out next year and go to another team. However in case he stays for his final 2 years of his contract is there any way for Brian Grant to take a slight pay cut?

If I remember correctly, Garnett didn't take a pay cut. He was in the last year of his deal which was paid him 25+ mil a year, then he had an option to extend the contract for increases of 12.5% (or about 3.1 mil a year). He chose not to do that and merely re-signed for 16 mil this year with 2 mil increases per year.

In general, NBA contracts are guaranteed and can't really be restructed the way contracts in other leagues (such as NFL and MLB). If you want more info on the CBA, here's a great FAQ website:
