Jonathan Toews finished Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final on the Blackhawks’ bench with an upper-body injury.

It appears Toews will be able to spend Game 6 on the ice as coach Joel Quenneville said Sunday: “Johnny is doing much better. We’re optimistic that he’ll be playing (Monday night).”

Toews was injured during the Hawks’ 3-1 victory Saturday night and did not take a shift in the third period. Toews — who has a history of concussions — took an elbow to the head from Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara early in the game and was leveled in front of the Boston goal by Johnny Boychuk in the second period.

The league reviewed the hit and determined Boychuk would not have a hearing or face supplemental discipline.

During a media session Sunday at TD Garden shortly after the Hawks arrived in Boston, Quenneville was asked his opinion of the hit, which came as Toews cruised across the slot with the puck at his feet. Boychuk braced and drilled Toews with the initial point of contact to the shoulder.

“It wasn't a penalty (called) on the play,” Quenneville said. “It was one of those hits in a tight area in front of the net. You can be vulnerable in that area for a big hit. The first part of contact we could talk about, but ... I'm not going to go there.”

And Bruins coach Claude Julien’s take on Boychuk’s hit?

“The same as the league,” Julien said. “They said it was clean, wasn't it? Then I agree with them.

“I’m not going to hide from that. If it wasn’t a clean hit, I’ve been a guy that supported those kinds of things that we need to get out of the game. But it was a clean hit.”

Hawks winger Patrick Sharp has been on the receiving end of several Boychuk hits during the finals but said they have been within the rules.
